Preparing to move off-campus? If so, you probably have a packing list with all the things you’ll need in your new home. Nevertheless, your list might need a little tweaking, especially if you have never lived independently outside of dorm. Unfortunately, after moving in, many students often find they are missing important items that are necessary for off-campus living. Take a look at the list below, which names 5 of these items, to make sure that your packing list is complete!

1. Kitchen tools – This one might seem obvious, but many students neglect to bring basic cooking utensils to their new place. Kitchen tools are essential for anybody living off-campus, because unlike dorm living, your rental home or apartment likely won’t come with a dining hall and meal plan. Instead, you will be responsible for making your own meals. Unless you want to survive off of frozen pizza, take-out, and ramen noodles, you will need some kitchen utensils to cook basic dishes. Although the massive variety and far-ranging prices of some kitchen tools may seem overwhelming, don’t stress! For most dishes, all you’ll need is a good pot, pan, baking pan or large bowl. Owning a spatula and large spoon is helpful for cooking, and some bowls, plates, cups, and eating utensils are also recommended, but in a pinch, paper or plastic utensils can also work. In addition, if you have a gas stove, matches or lighters are necessary. With these basic kitchen tools, and a little creativity, you’ll find yourself whipping up dishes to impress your friends in no time!

2. Cleaning supplies – In addition to investing in some solid kitchen utensils, you may also want to consider buying some basic cleaning supplies. Although you may have only had a small room to worry about while living in a dorm, you and your housemates will need to keep your rooms, bathrooms, and common areas tidy while living off-campus. For these purposes, it is often useful to own a vacuum, dustpan, broom, and mop. Additionally, items such as Lysol, Windex, toilet cleaners, and air fresheners can also contribute to keeping your new home clean.

3. Reusable bags – Because you will be cooking most of your meals, you will also have to take regular trips to the grocery store. Reusable bags can be extremely helpful for lugging food from the grocery store to your new place, especially if you do not have a car and are reliant on public transportation. Sturdier than regular plastic bags, reusable bags can be trusted to carry heavy loads without breaking, and can often be found in bright patterns and colors. Additionally, reusable bags are better for the environment, and can be used for a variety of other purposes, such as carrying or storing books or clothing.

4. Flashlights and candles – Flashlights, candles, and headlamps are useful on a daily basis. They can be invaluable when the power goes out, especially if you don’t have a generator, and can also be used when you are trying to get something out of the basement, attic, or a dark closet. They also can help with household repairs. In addition, candles can serve as beautiful decorations and can act as air fresheners, helping to cover up smells from when you inevitably screw up in the kitchen.

5. Shower curtains and bath mats – While living in a dorm, these things were likely provided for you, however, they probably won’t be when you move into your off-campus home. Invest in a shower curtain, bath mat, and some other bathroom necessities such as a small trashcan and a toilet plunger. By doing so, you’ll save yourself a lot of cleanup from water on the floor, and decrease your chances of slipping and hurting yourself. While you’re grabbing these items, it’s also advisable to buy a few new hand and bath towels.
